The Impact of Patient Advocacy & Navigation

Today’s healthcare system can feel overwhelming, especially for patients facing serious, chronic, or complex medical conditions. Research has shown that patient navigation and advocacy services can significantly improve healthcare experiences, care coordination, and follow-through with treatment recommendations.

Studies have demonstrated that patients working with patient navigators are more likely to:

  • Complete recommended follow-up care

  • Attend specialist appointments

  • Begin treatment sooner

  • Better understand diagnoses and treatment plans

  • Experience improved care coordination

  • Feel more confident navigating the healthcare system

A large meta-analysis published in Patient Education and Counseling reviewed 25 randomized controlled trials and found that patients receiving patient navigation services were:

  • 2.48 times more likely to complete recommended health screenings

  • 2.55 times more likely to attend important healthcare appointments and recommended care events compared with usual care

Another large national cancer navigation study involving more than 10,000 patients found that patient navigation improved:

  • Timeliness of diagnosis

  • Speed of treatment initiation

  • Follow-through after abnormal test results

The study demonstrated that patients receiving navigation support had a 51% greater likelihood of achieving timely diagnostic resolution and a 43% greater likelihood of timely treatment initiation compared with standard care alone.

Additional systematic reviews have shown that patient navigation services can help reduce delays in care, improve communication between specialists, increase adherence to follow-up recommendations, and improve patient satisfaction and confidence during difficult medical situations.

For patients and families facing complex healthcare decisions, having an experienced Nurse Practitioner advocate can provide clarity, organization, support, and peace of mind throughout the medical journey.
